FOOD FAIR AND FORUM
The future of food will meet at YES Exhibition
Food, which is the most basic need of human life, has started to be handled in a completely different way today after millions of years. As climate change and the pandemic reveal how fragile food supply chains are, solutions are now sought to develop food systems that can provide sustainable, economic and healthy nutrition to the world population, which is rapidly approaching 10 billion. On the one hand, there is an excessive increase in the demand for food; on the other hand, threats to the sustainability of food are increasing. The food industry began to reshape with these developments. While the industry is evolving, countries have commenced to change their food policies and strategies.
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports, currently a total of 4.5 billion tons of food is produced in the world. Of this, 3.1 billion tons are plant food, 1.1 billion tons are animal food and 170 million tons are aquaculture products. However, the global population is expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, and the demand for food is expected to increase by up to 60 percent.
A total of 2.2 billion tons of grain was produced in the world in the 2020-2021 season. Of this, 749 million tons were used for food and 1 billion tons for feed. However, these production figures in grains, which meet two-thirds of the world's daily energy and protein needs, will not be enough to meet the ever-increasing demand. All these statistics prove that efficient, inclusive, innovative and sustainable food production is vital to ensure food security of future generations.
The food industry, whose dynamics have been changed with the impact of climate change and the pandemic, is also getting transformed to meet expectations in this new process driven by the demand for safer and healthier nutrition. The sector invests in R&D and innovation, and develops innovative products to consolidate its position in the food industry, whose annual global volume has reached 8.3 trillion dollars. The reflection of this great transformation in the industry will show itself at the international YES FOOD EXPO & FORUM, which will be held in Istanbul between 30 November and 3 December.
